With the year now in full swing attention for the CGA(Gibraltar) turns to qualification for the forthcoming 2010 Games in Delhi, India in October this year.
The qualification process has been open for the past two years with several athletes meeting the MQS (minimum qualifying standard), however all athletes looking to represent Gibraltar in Delhi will be required to attain the standard once again between 15th February and 30th June, with the squad announced in early July.
On the Athletic track time trials have begun with the GAAA’s hold monthly qualifying sessions, Gibraltar’s elite swimmers have begun competing away from the Rock, most recently at the Andalusia Championships in Tarifa, while the Rock’s two Team GB Rhythmic Gymnasts Nicola Bosio and Gerorgina Cassar are travelling to the UK for regular squad meets.
A program of events for the Rock’s shooters has been drawn up with eight of the shooters looking the meet MQS heading to India this week to compete at the trail event for the Games, The Commonwealth Shooting Championships. Pistol Shooter Jonathan Patron, Prone Riflers Wayne Piri, Albert Buhagiar & Adrian Lugnani along with Clay Target Shooters Kevin Cowles, Tom Sawyer, Gary Cooper and Harry Murphy will looking to use the competition to meet the set standard and a custom themselves to the ranges which will be used for the games.
The Rock’s cyclists will also be out on the campo roads in the coming months, looking for the time required to represent Gibraltar in both the time trial and road race events in Delhi.
Looking ahead to next month and Chef de Mission Harry Murphy and General Team manager Joe Schembri will be travelling to Delhi for a series of Commonwealth meetings in the build up to the Games, one of the main points of discussion will be security, after recent events on the sub-continent.
A busy time ahead for the athletes and committee alike as the clock ticks down to Delhi2010.
